Review: George’s BBQ; Owensboro, Kentucky
By bbqandbourbon on May 24, 2009 in Featured, Kentucky Barbeque
If you’re going to visit George’s BBQ in Owensboro, Kentucky, go for the dessert and the jam session because the food isn’t worth the trip.
I thought we’d hit the jackpot because George’s BBQ offers a sampler plate: mutton, pork and beef.
I was wrong.
My first clue came when I asked the waitress which sides she recommended. There was nothing special about the sides: your typical barbeque restaurant selection: slaw, beans, potato salad, mashed potatoes, green beans, tomatoes, etc. etc.
She said she like the mashed potatoes. Well, so do I, but what can you do to mashed potatoes that haven’t been done a thousand times before?
So I ordered baked beans and slaw.

I got the sampler plate, baked beans and potato salad. Meh. same difference. Cold meat is cold meat. Yep, the meat wasn’t just warm, it actually was on the cold side. Not even room temperature.
Did I complain? No. I want things right the first time. What would they do microwave it? Before you tell me I ate the wrong thing, I should have ordered Burgoo… Let’s just get this out in the open. Burgoo isn’t for me.
Did I eat it what was in front of me? Yes, because I had to clean up my plate before I could get the production from this bad boy:

Yep, homemade ice cream, the old fashioned way (almost, it had an electric motor, not a hand crank.) Ending a below-average meal with an above average dessert is more than break even they way I figure things.

Another nice surprise was a jam session by some local musicians. They wandered in, pulled up a chair, traded a few insults and started jamming.
That’s pretty cool.
Go to George’s BBQ in Owensboro, but eat first and visit them for their home made ice cream and cobblers. Hopefully you’ll find a little jam too.

@Wanda: Thanks for the update. I’ll give them a few weeks to work out the kinks and stop in for a visit.

I’ve lived in O’boro most of my life and have never eaten here. I’ve always frequented Old Hickory out of family tradition, but a close friend has always gone to Moonlight. I was curious you’d ever eaten at either of these places. There’s a bit of a fan base for both places and we’ve been arguing over which place is better for years.
