Chaney’s Bar-B-Q Landmark Kentucky Restaurant Destroyed by Fire

chaneysbarbqA fire destroyed a BBQ restaurant that had served people of Western Kentucky for five generations.

Chaney’s Bar-B-Q in Central City was totally destroyed early Friday morning, April 11, 2009.

Laurene and Arthur Chaney bought the restaurant in 1954, the day Artie Ross was born, said 76 year old Wanda Doss.

Artie Doss was the operator of the Barbeque restaurant. For the past 55 years, Chaney’s Bar-B-Q restaurant survived based on the quality of it’s namesake food.

The restaurant had a fire in 1970 but recovered.

Like so many small town eateries, Chaney’s Bar-B-Q also served as an unofficial gathering place – but also functioned as an official gathering place when it came time to vote. It was a polling place.

everlybrothersCentral City is the home to the Everly Brothers, who return annually for a free community concert. The restaurant is located at 1727 West Everly Brothers Blvd. in Central City, the county seat of Muhlenberg County, made famous by John Prine.

And daddy wont you take me back to Muhlenberg county
Down by the green river where paradise lay
Well, Im sorry my son, but youre too late in asking
Mister peabodys coal train has hauled it away

Mrs. Doss says she will not rebuild.

Fire officials believe it started at the attic’s roof after it was struck by lightning.
